The Aquila F3A Pattern airplane was born out of the need for high quality ARF airplanes capable of completing the Master's pattern with ease yet be able to be flown by novice F3A pilots effectively in the Sportsman class. By looking at the industry we decided to build this airplane around the OS 1.20-AX engine. This engine is more than capable of flying this airplane through the sequences without the complexity of a piped-engine arrangement. This simplifies the design and maintenance so that the entry level F3A pilot can easily transition from his Sport airplane to an F3A capable airplane. However, a pipe tunnel is hidden beneath the Monokote on the belly of the Aquila. So if a standard muffler arrangement is not to your liking, or you just want more power, you can easily add your pipe to this airplane! Replacing the standard muffler with a piped-arrangement should lower the final weight of your airplane. Unfortunately, the final weight of your airplane is determined by how much "stuff" you put into the airframe. Our Aquila fully assembled awaiting your radio gear, motor system, etc. weighs in at 101 ounces -- That's 6.3 lbs! Because these are hand-made kits, there will be variations in the weight of any individual kit.
The Aquila has received the benefit of 2 years development and design and was designed from the ground up to be a thoroughbred F3A performer and not a sport airplane that looks like a pattern ship. Followed by a year of working through production prototypes to ensure our overseas manufacturer was building the exact airplane we designed.
Our yellow color-scheme was selected after lengthy debates and is designed for ease of visibility during all aspects of flight from take-off, maneuvers, to landing. We have added a complementary white color-scheme to our 2M Aquila F3A ARFs. Please select your favorite color when ordering. We cover our Aquila ARFs only in high quality Monokote film.
Built using the latest design and manufacture technologies, the kit features all built-up construction for ease of maintenance and repair, should you need to. The design was also given enough ground clearance to support an 18" propeller. The airplane features a floating firewall arrangement that lets you exactly position your motor to the cowl and spinner plate. Once positioned, the floating firewall is fixed in place.
The hardware package is fairly complete. You'll need to add an engine mount, along with your radio gear, engine, etc.. Control horns are provided, as are the wheels, and other components including a fuel tank. You should take a look at the Tech-Aero power regulators we carry -- they are a perfect addition to your Aquila purchase.
The construction of the Aquila F3A is mostly balsa, lite-ply, and some fiberglass (cowl, wheel pants, etc). This enables us to build these aircraft very light and very strong. We beefed up the aluminum landing gear for those occasional off-runway landings. If you want to lighten the plane, then select the Carbon Fiber landing gear version version. The 2-piece wing is supported by an aluminum 25mm diameter x 660mm wing-tube and socket. We also offer an option to purchase a Carbon Fiber wing tube for additional weight savings. Using the carbon fiber wing tube and landing gear saves you 6-8 ounces of weight that is forward of the recommended CG location. The horizontal stabilizers are also supported by an aluminum tube and are removable for easy transportation.
The 2M Aquila F3A comes in White, Yellow, or ARC format.
